SPRING HAS SPRUNG…

As I sat out on my balcony the other day in the warmth of the afternoon sunshine, looking out at the ocean and at my flowers in bloom, I was overwhelmed by a deep sense of gratitude. (ok, I admit I  had a little well!)

I so enjoy the remarkable freshness at this time of the year.

As we SPRING FORWARD an hour this weekend, let’s remember to celebrate some of the wonders of Spring! How will you spend that extra hour of daylight? See that hour as your own private celebration of the season!

Spring-cleaning can be a welcome ritual. I love getting rid of things that no longer serve me, creating that vacuum that the Universe abhors and wants to fill up again. In addition to a year’s worth of clutter, we can use our Spring-cleaning to shed whatever emotional, physical or spiritual baggage we no longer need.

This could be a time to separate ourselves from things we may not want in our lives, sort of like “replanting” our life’s experiences. We might shed a bad habit, or a few people who hold us back. Let’s not be afraid to “pull a few weeds” this spring.

Spring is a time of looking ahead, with the promise of Summer to come. Its gentle warmth is a teaser for the Summer heat that I am longing for.

It’s a time to plan the outdoor experiences we’ve been waiting to have again. Ever notice that first sunny Spring day when all the toys come out? People are riding motorcycles, washing cars and windows, or walking the seawall without a jacket, bragging to our friends back east that are still deep in winter snow. Springtime is freedom!

In addition to play, Spring is often filled with its own unique work to prepare for the coming season. Whether caring for a simple potted balcony garden like I enjoy, or tilling acres of farmland, Springtime is rooted in preparation for Summer growth.

Look around. Springtime is a busy time. Nests are being rebuilt by those who flew south for the Winter and now have returned home. Leaves are sprouting, flowers blossoming. But remember, the growth we see above the Earth is a reflection of the growth that occurs beneath the Earth.

Once the soil thaws, it allows roots to grow a tiny bit deeper and take in what they couldn’t during Winter’s deep freeze. Sometimes it’s easier to understand what you can see by looking beneath the surface, acknowledging the things you can’t see.

We’re not all that different from what we see in our yards. In the Spring, we too change with the seasons. Where Winter keeps us indoors, looking inwardly, Spring takes us outside, out of our homes and out of ourselves.

Look at the trees -- their sap begins to run again in the Spring. So do our own creative juices. But unlike trees, we aren't physically rooted. You can’t see our “roots” but they are there none the less. We hibernate when it’s cold; we spring back to life when its warm.

While the Earth colourfully paints Herself and anoints Herself with fragrance – we also break out our Spring wardrobe! As reincarnated beings, our cycle of life is seasonal. We spring back into life, growing until we peak and bloom. We eventually wither and fall, to rest again for a Winter-like sleep, dreaming of things to come the next time around…

Most cultures celebrate Spring as a rebirth, as a rejuvenation, where something or someone springs back to life: Easter for sure, but also wearing green as on Saint Patrick’s Day. (March 17th is near the first day of Spring – when the Earth itself starts to wear green again too!)

Students have Spring Break. Even paying your income tax can be a celebration of Spring. Here in Canada, once a year at the end of April we “square up” with the taxman. We can choose to see our taxes as a tool for channeling positive energy towards social change, funding for schools, libraries, hospitals, protecting our many freedoms. If you have a refund coming this year, celebrate it as one of Spring’s many gifts.

As you tuck yourself into that lost hour of sleep this weekend, it might be a time to reflect on this: What do you look forward to rekindling this Spring?

Have a wonderful month!
